Title: D-LITE,
One by one, listen to my stories. I am a part of Bigbang and I am also a singer
Not long before, D-LITE released his Japanese cover album “D’scover” and it started a hot topic as it was ranked #2 on Oricon’s Weekly Chart. At the latter half of last year, D-LITE was staying in Japan for a long period of time to work on his album. It took 3 months to complete the production of the album and it is filled with D-LITE’s charm.
“It was tough selecting songs. I had to collate all the songs selected by staff members and listen to it one by one. In the beginning, I did not bother about the content of the lyrics but rather I selected songs based on the amount of warmth it contained and how the song touched my heart. After filtering my list, I then selected songs that suit my voice and also checked on the lyrics.”
When we asked him if there were any songs that he fell in love with the lyrics, he shyly smile and replied “Of course, it’s ‘Singer’s Ballad’”
“I really like the lyrics. It is very similar to what I want to say. So, it is not only singing but hoping people would listen to what I have to say and sing it out like I am speaking.”
Although D-LITE is Korean, he sounds very natural singing Japanese songs and it left a deep impression on others.
“I think to a person who keeps listening to original songs, every time they listen to that song, it brings back some memories of their past that belongs to them. So, in order not to ruin them, I considered a lot and thought of where I should add my own colors in. I think singing is not only about skills but it is about accumulating all your experience and concepts and focus it on the lyrics and melody of the song and singing it. I believe in that way, I am able to add D-LITE’s colors in naturally and it will become a song with my style.”
Compared to “Singer’s Ballad” which is easier for you to immerse yourself into it, the more challenging song would be Ikimono-gakari’s “Joyful”.
“I was a little worried before performing the song but once recording started, I was enjoying myself. I felt like I was a child again.”
When you first knew J-Pop, it was in junior school where visual music was popular.
“I watched music channels on TV but when I was young I thought it was scary so I didn’t like it. As the impression that time was too deep, I did not listen to Japanese music afterward until Bigbang collaborated with a Japanese producer DAISHI DANCE for “My Heaven” and “Haru Haru”. After I learnt that Japanese music is not all about the intenseness, I started listening to other Japanese songs. Now I like listening to a sub-genre called Shibuya-kei.”
Although D-LITE san has released a trot solo song in Korea, has experience in musicals and also able to grasp freely the different genres of music, however this time round, you are releasing your first solo album in Japan and also holding a national concert. This interview is done before the national tour but instead of nervousness, we felt calmness from him.
“To a singer, we place importance in being able to have direct contact with our audience. I have been to countless stages with Bigbang but this time it is just me alone. My anticipation for this tour outweighs my worries. This album was completed step by step, day by day and what I want to show on stage is to show everybody D-LITE’s all. That is a concert I would like to do.”
Conducting your tour around the whole nation and what exactly will you show your audience? This is what we are waiting to see. Last year, Bigbang performed in South America as well and that left a deep impression on D-LITE.
“At first I was really worried as it was the first time we are visiting so many countries and we do not know if they accept or recognize us and our music. But once the concert started, I saw how all of them are able to sing to our songs and how they gave us support by responding loudly. I thank them very much.”
The world tour then came upon to Tokyo Dome and during the encore, the members also interacted with the audience which was impressive.
“Due to the condition of the venue and time constraints, we had different situations so we always had to do impromptu stuffs that we are happy to do too. In future, I want to do a concert like this as well.”
Small words below the photo: D-LITE’s original name is Kang Daesung. He possesses an overwhelming and warm voice and also a warm character. “D’scover” is a collection of covered Japanese songs by D-LITE.

“If Bigbang is a family, G-Dragon will be a strict father, if you did anything wrong he will point it out to you mercilessly. SOL is the mother who will console you afterward. Then, T.O.P is… a baby (laugh).”
It is no secret to fans that T.O.P has a child’s heart. He will not speak much on stage but when off stage, he is someone funny and someone who will always make the members laugh. Lastly it would be the maknae V.I. “The truth is, all the members are the youngest at home other than V.I who is the elder brother of his family. He is the youngest in the group yet he looks like the eldest, I didn’t dare to believe it at first (laugh). After a few years of communicating, our relationship improved.”
What are FANS to D-LITE?
“I belong to the type who will not perform excessively on stage but rather, I support them from far. I feel that my fans are like me, they don’t show off too much but they always support me without changing. So I am very thankful and I trust them very much.”

Singers and their fans are very similar, this is because they are like soul-mates.
