J-Pop cover album – [An album that brings happiness]
Singer – D-LITE

Releasing his first solo album “D’scover” on the 27th of February. Amongst the 12 songs, 10 songs are covers of Japanese songs, below is the interview done with him related to his work.

Warmth song as the centerpiece

Sankei Express (SE): You fell in love with J-Pop 4 years ago.
D-LITE: It’s because of the collaboration between DAISHI DANCE and Bigbang for the songs “Haru Haru” and “My Heaven”. After that, I developed an interest in J-Pop and Shibuya-Kei then I searched for the songs myself online. I thought of standing on stage one day then the solo project plans was mentioned to me.

SE: You started preparing last year during July and at the same time, maknae V.I (22) is constantly appearing on many variety programs and using his fluent Japanese to show his humorous side.
D-LITE: I have always been in Japan doing my recordings but nobody knows (laugh).

SE: D’scover used Saito Kazuyoshi’s “Singer Ballad” as the title track and this song matches well with D-LITE’s special husky voice which allows one to feel warmth. Your selection of songs have also shown your advantages to us.
D-LITE: I selected songs that give off warmth based on my first impression in a list of about 200 J-Pop songs. I think that after listening to all the recorded songs in my album, one’s heart will become warmer and this is an album that brings happiness to people.

Feeling frustrated because of the high notes

SE: This time you challenged female songs like JUJU’s “Like Overflowing With Kindness” and MISIA’s “Missing You Now”. I guess their songs shouldn’t be too hard for you because you have been praised as a singer who has a wide range of pitch and has a different style ranging from a tough to ballad genre.
D-LITE: Not really! Previously I did not notice the pitch problem and I selected only songs that I liked. When it was time to start recording, I was really frustrated because of the key being too high. Then I just continued challenging and trying to search for the key that matches my voice.

SE: The line-up of producers you have is impressive; it includes Kameda Seiji, Matsuo Kiyoshi, Sasaji Masanori and VERBAL (m-flo).
D-LITE: During the meeting I expressed about my ideal image. For example, there are some songs where I wanted it to be warm and seem like there are cherry blossoms floating in the sky etc. It is hard to express music using language but the producers are able to portray what I want nicely in music so I am very grateful to them.

Japan is a huge “stage”

SE: In your completed world tour, Japan’s passion stands out the most. Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka Domes attracted 300,000 fans. What is Japan to D-LITE?
D-LITE: For me, Japan is a huge “stage” and I always have a thankful heart when I am here. Someone said that although Korea is very near Japan, their relationship is very far apart. However, I like Japan’s culture and my favourite is their food. Also, I am very grateful and thankful for fans who love our music and our live concerts.

SE: Your upcoming solo performance on the 23rd, 24th, 30th and 31st March at Kobe World Memorial Hall and Nippon Budokan is something worth waiting for.
D-LITE: I would like everybody to see a different side of me, to be in the same mind as my fans and to create an awesome stage. At the same time, it is to let people who do not know about D-LITE know more about me. This is what I am preparing for right now.
