The
first world tour, “BIGBANG ALIVE GALAXY TOUR 2012” brought in 800,000 fans from
all around the world in Europe, America and Asia. Member of monster group
BIGBANG, D-LITE will be debuting in Japan as a solo artist with his J-pop cover
album “D’scover”
This is an album that can represent the four royal producers in Japan, Seiji Kameda, Matsuo Kiyoshi, Sasaji Masanori and VERBAL (m-flo). With the four producers and D-LITE’s one and only strong voice that contains warmth, this will be an album where people are able to admire D-LITE’s charm. We are now having an interview with D-LITE near to his album release date.
In 5th of December 2012, at the anticipated Tokyo Dome Bigbang performance, D-LITE brought a surprise to the 55,000 fans when he announced that he will be debuting in Japan with a solo album. “D’scover” will be released on the 27th of February (Wednesday). The 10 songs that he recorded in the album are songs that he personally chose himself. While he was preparing for Bigbang’s world tour and also staying in Japan by himself to prepare for his cover album, rather than being affected by the condition of his throat and jetlag, D-LITE is more concerned about his battle with Japanese language everyday and the production of the album.
Ticket A: From a song list of 100 songs, D-LITE said, “I only wanted to sing songs that I really wanted to sing and after the first try, if I feel the song is fine, I will then select it. This is how I chose the 10 songs in the album”. While recording, D-LITE will listen to the original song, not only understanding the meaning in the song but also observing the original singer’s performances and trying to connect with the singer’s emotions before recording the cover.
D-LITE: The first time I heard the original songs and viewed the performances, I saw the colors of the original singers being brought out from the song and I will feel that it is a difficult cover because I will start thinking, “So… what is my color?” If I do not add my own color in the cover songs, I feel that it will be disrespectful to the people listening to it. For every song, needless to say, not only the music has to be expressed, but also the lyrics. I have to understand the whole song myself and then use my own way to express the meaning of the songs. Even though it is not my original song, the songs I sing will become my story and it will become my message. Thus, I cannot sing a song without first understanding the lyrics and meaning of its entirety.
Ticket A: Not only that, if the song you are covering has already been covered, you will still search for the other cover song and listen to it. Even D-LITE is busy with the world tour, you will still take time out of your schedule and immerse yourself in music because you want to feel it yourself.
D-LITE: During the recording session, I really thought through a lot. As I want to express myself specifically about the image in my heart, I had discussions with the producers for a few times. About the songs, I’ve reached the point where if I continued asking I will be in trouble because of my non-stop asking (laugh). I have worked hard so as to show my characteristics that only belongs to me to everybody, every song requires a long time and I think this will be a work that will have everybody’s stamp of approval on it!
Ticket A: Other than songs from solo male artists like Kazuyoshi Saito’s “歌うたいのバラッド”(Singer’s Ballad), and solo female artists like Ayaka’s “Hello” and MISIA’s “逢いたくていま”(Missing You Now) , there is also Remioromen’s “夢の蕾”(The Flower Bud of My Dream) and Do as Infinity’s “Sunny Hill”, songs from different genres. The four producers (Seiji Kameda, Matsuo Kiyoshi, Sasaji Masanori and VERBAL (m-flo)) representing Japan used live instruments and live bands and combine them together as a whole. Although there are many different charms, it all centers around D-LITE’s “voice”.
D-LITE: I am also very satisfied with this album that is filled with many changes and different characteristics. The common point for all songs is that all the original singers sang very well (laugh) and also “warmth”. It feels like a baby’s warmth when being carried in their mom’s womb and we want to emphasize the feeling where it brings back certain memories for people when they listen to the songs I am covering. Hopefully, via the original lyrics and my voice, fans who listen to my music are able to feel the warmth, charm, passion and message that I am conveying to them.
Ticket A: The “warmth” and “passion” that you mentioned about is the common thing in D-LITE’s “voice”. From a range of being a little husky to being able to project your voice out loud to an impressive range is D-LITE’s biggest charm and also your weapon.
D-LITE: It would be the best if I can just sing earnestly without considering anything. To be able to sing earnestly and also integrating my own idea in is my ideal type of singing but it is also the hardest part of it.. However, I believe that as long as I sing with an earnest attitude, my voice will be blended in to the music very naturally isn’t it.
Ticket A: Regardless of gender and genre, it’s not only your singing skills or straight forward performances, you will also convey your “earnest” attitude and idea via the whole song and this is the specialty of D-LITE. I am able to think of D-LITE’s character based on the songs. For example, in “全力少年”(Powerful Boy) you sound like a youth who is working very hard and it brought out an innocent side of D-LITE with your gestures as well. “やさしさで溢れるように”(Like Overflowing With Kindness) is your care and concern for your members, staff, fans and people around you. “じょいふる”(Joyful) is the joy brought out from your heart when you are on stage, where you share the stage with your fans. “アイ”(Love) is your broad chest filled with overflowing kindness and love, just like how an angel spreads their lovely smiles and occasional sorrow. Just like this, all these song titles, lyrics and melody represents D-LITE. In the melody, listeners will feel a different expression and image with your voice, something that other members will not be able to do, and it is also something that belongs uniquely to D-LITE. D-LITE personally replaced the D in Daesung with D in discover together to make the word “D’scover”.
D-LITE: Via the work, I re-discovered the wonderful yet difficult new Japanese music. As it is my first solo album, there are new charms and new characters in it. After singing I realized that I can have a change like this.. I really found a lot of new things from myself.
Ticket A: Actually, if you listened to this album with a Bigbang view, it will not be what fans will expect. To fans who have previously listened to Bigbang’s song and know about your music preferences and activities will think that this is an album full of D-LITE features but to people who doesn’t care and doesn’t know about D-LITE, and to J-pop fans who have not came across your music before, to them, it is not Bigbang’s D-LITE but a new D-LITE who would like to express himself with an entirely new mood and they would like to feel for themselves your “voice” and soul in this album.
D-LITE: Although this is different from Bigbang’s style, Bigbang does sing ballads as well and there are quite many sad songs. The songs I chose this time contains melody line, something that only J-pop has, so I guess that will capture the interest of Japanese. Recording for Bigbang and my solo is different. For Bigbang, it doesn’t start and end with my voice everytime, but it is a song where I will listen to the members’ voice and mood and then I will consider what key I should sing in order to make it proceed smoothly. For solo the whole song is my story! From the start to the end, I have to think of what I want to say, and think of solving my problems and also incorporating my own ideas, performance and responsibility all at once in to the song.
Ticket A: In addition, during Bigbang’s Japan leg you’ve also performed the highly popular self composed songs “Wings” and “Baby Don’t Cry” in Japanese. You have also collaborated with nice vocal feat VERBAL (m-flo) for 今晚boogieback”(Tonight is Boogieback) in a special collaboration track! It is the only song that features passion like Bigbang’s fun electronic songs. “Baby Don’t Cry” is also known as a love song that is of high quality and it is a song that is famous amongst all the famous songs he will be covering. “Baby Don’t Cry” is recorded in Japanese for the first time and the message it brings and the overflowing feelings being brought upon by the voice will impact the heart via your ears. “Wings” is his first time composing lyrics together with G-dragon and it is a power tune that is full of energy and it gives one the determination to venture to the future.
In the Alive tour previously, D-LITE’s solo where he extended his wings and flew around the stadiums left a deep impression and he actually combined the recording version of “Wings” in Japanese and his live performance of “Wings” together to put it as a MV and included it in the DVD!
Talking about MV’s, you collaborated with Han Samin who has filmed “Love Song”, “Bad Boy” and “Blue” MVs and you would like to portray a MV that seems like a short film.
To be honest, from the start till the end, it is a recording that will bring many troubles. However, you will not compromise on the respect you give to each song and this is because you have such a passion for music.
D-LITE: Because I feel that if I don’t do this, I will not be able to show anything new. My ability is still lacking and I have a lack of experience as well. I think it is necessary to be researching into many things. I have also mentioned this just now that I am most serious when it comes to “singing earnestly”. It will be great if listeners are able to experience it themselves.
Ticket A: 23rd and 24th of March in Kobe’s World Memorial Hall, 30th and 31st of March in Nippon Budokan, together with D-LITE, we have decided to hold four performances across two cities to bring the highly anticipated “D’scover Tour 2013 in Japan ~D-Live~”! Right now, we have actually received 44,000 ticket applications and it seems like we will be introducing premium tickets! It is needless to say that his solo live has high expectations from fans as well.
D-LITE: I really can’t believe it, I am so happy, I will work hard! It is a whole new content compared to Bigbang’s concert. I will let people discover a new me and my charms and LIVE. Please look forward to it with high expectations! It is just like when I am recording an album filled with warmth, the LIVE will have to be filled with warm air as well as bringing a world stage view of LIVE. It will really become a warm LIVE so I don’t think you guys have to bring your jackets (laugh). Instead of warm I will say it is a HOT LIVE, I think I will perspire profusely so I will be wearing something thinner (laugh).
Ticket A: D-LITE’s “voice” will definitely shine bright and strong during the live performances. When his voice meets the melody, regardless of impromptu or a small soft breathing, it will allow people to think that “Right now, I am still alive”. Of course the audio matters too, it will reflect the warmth and passion in his voice and it seems like the moon is hugging a mysterious light…
All types of feelings will be dissolved into light and being released, directing listeners to the path. This is because, in D-LITE’S path here, he had to experience pain, trouble and confusion, all types of happiness, sadness and anger accumulated in order to shine brightly once more.
D-LITE: When producing this album, I found myself to be lacking in many places, I feel that I still have much more to learn in many areas. However, I want to do it even more and I have the confidence of doing it. Right now, I want to do my utmost best in doing what I can do. My true feeling is that… I am so thrilled (laugh). When I look back at the times I was producing the album, to be honest, it was very tough (wry smile). I feel that this assignment(solo album) given to me gave me a good experience and it made me grow. I thank everyone truly for giving me such a good chance. I will carry this appreciation and work even harder to let everyone feel happy and satisfied with my work! As long as there are fans beside me, I will take out my endless energy! If this album can let everybody have good memories I will be happy too! After this, I will continue to work harder and I will entrust everybody for giving me aid and support!!!
Note: There are some parts where Ticket A took excerpts from Team D-LITE’s from AVEX essay about Daesung and D’scover album and asked Daesung to comment about it.
