Have you discovered anything around you lately?
“Member V.I don’t really eat kimchi
when he first entered the company. He went on like this for 10 years and I do
not know when but he started eating it recently. Looking at him, I discovered
that even when a person does not like this particular food, when he continues
to eat, he is able to overcome that fear (laugh)”
The famous Japanese celebrity that you would like to meet at least once is?
“Mana Ashida! Although she is very
young but her acting skills are awesome. Coffee… No, the juice can be drank too
(laugh)”
The Japanese television program and movie you like is?
“For movies it would be ‘Gantz’ and
‘Moteki’, but my ultimate favourite would be ‘Nobody Knows’. Although the
content is a little heavy but this is a film that allows one to think well. For
TV programs, I’ve watched the one where V.I appeared earlier on. It was great,
but it seems like his variety material are not really accepted (laugh). If his
Japanese skills are even better, he would be able to perform his “joke” better.
As we are family, I will not speak quite strictly (laugh)”
How did you feel when you decide to debut in Japan?
“Although I feel pressured, but I
thought this was really a good opportunity. In Bigbang there is our group color
in it, but for a solo album, I have to portray what I think and let people
discover my new charm. When in Bigbang, it gives people the feeling of a huge
amount of energy, but this album will showcase my gentle heart and voice. It
will be a combination of how I felt and my experiences I had since I was
born—honestly expressed. When completed, I will be very satisfied.”
You had to select 10 J-Pop songs to cover out of a list of 200 songs, what did
you base your selection on?
“When choosing songs it was based on the
first impression I had of it. I selected songs that I purely wanted to sing.
Next, I had to select songs that can bring out my colors. The song has to carry
its own message and idea, and then I have to understand the song better and add
my own colors in. Even if it doesn’t feel like the original song, it is because
I have become the one telling my story. I am singing my thoughts, my
performance and responsibility. The common point for all songs would be
“warmth”. I am trying to emphasize on the type of warmth where babies are in
their mothers’ womb. During recording, I wanted to say what I wanted to say to
people who want to listen and I am trying to do this for all the songs. The
listeners will then be communicating with me and when they feel warmth from my
songs, I will be happy.”
Which song did you inject the most feelings into?
“It will be Saito Kazuyoshi’s ‘Singer’s
Ballad’. It is a song I like very much so I requested to sing it. It was also
made into a MV and I suggested inviting Han Samin to direct it. He was the one
who was also the director for Bigbang’s “Blue” MV. Everybody who helped out
with the MV was really nice and the best point was that they allowed me to play
the piano. For this, a small sized piano was specially bought and I have been practicing
it during the Japan tours. I hope everyone will look out for it!!”
Your solo tour will begin this month, what’s your motivation?
“I am very nervous and also very
pressured because I want to showcase the best to allow fans to enjoy the
concert. It is different from Bigbang’s concert and I hope everyone can
discover my new charm during the live. Please wait for it!! It has the same
concept as the album, I want to make the air in the venue warm and I intend not
to wear my jacket as well! (laugh)”
