First Japanese solo single
‘I Love You’
By D-LITE

Following the release of “D’scover” on the 27th of February, people has increased their anticipation for D-LITE’s (24) debut. His solo tour that lasted for 3 months starting from March also has a perfect ending to it. D-LITE said that he received many presents from all individuals and that he received a huge amount of energy especially from the fans. D-LITE then released his solo single which everybody has been waiting for. He collaborated with world renowned violinist Hakase Taro and following up his Japanese cover album, he is once again covering ‘I Love You’ in Japanese as well. To this, let us have a good chat with him.

CHOA: You released your solo single ‘I Love You’ in Japan on the 31st of July.
D-LITE: ‘I Love You’ is a classic golden song and it has the same presence as its composer Yutaka Ozaki. It is also a very famous song in Korea and it was also being covered in a very interesting way. Initially I had doubts as well and I wondered if I was able to sing this song without ruining the original song’s impression. However, as I already like this song way before I was to cover it, I had a clear mindset on how I want to re-arrange this song. I also had a very intense feeling of trying to challenge this song. During the recording process, what I care most about is respecting the original song’s vibe. I think that is the most important thing.

CHOA: How would you like to present your own unique colors?
D-LITE: This is the most important part about covering a song. I want to use the song to showcase my different layers. Up till the first chorus, I want to maintain the original song’s mood, atmosphere and from the second verse onwards, I began to think back about how I first felt when I heard this song and adding my own traits in the song as well.

CHOA: You challenged your first kiss scene in this MV.
D-LITE: I was really nervous about filming but once I thought of starting it, I calmed down (laugh). I did not really have much NGs when filming it but due to the different angles required, I had to film it 5 or 6 times. If we continued filming, I think the camera will be able to catch a better expression of mine (laugh).

CHOA: It’s your first time collaborating with Hakase Taro.
D-LITE: Due to time constraints, we did not really sit down and have a chat about music. But once I listened to Hakase Taro’s melody, I had the feeling of “connecting via music”. I was able to clearly present a vocal impression of “let’s just perform it with this feeling”. Although time is limited, I still enjoyed the process.

CHOA: What do you look out for the most?
D-LITE: It seems to be uncommon to be listening to folk in such a hot weather but summer is the season of love. Everybody listens to the music, no matter what love they have, they will want to charge forward. I highly recommend it oh!

CHOA: What is singing to you?
D-LITE: Occasionally, I will think that if there is no “song” and there is no “singing”, what will I be doing right now at this moment. I can’t find an answer. Other than singing, I won’t be able to do anything else. Precisely like this, God gave me such a skill, to make me a singer. I guess this is what they call “fate”.

CHOA: What are Bigbang’s future plans?
D-LITE: This year, the members are busy with their solo activities and although all 5 of us do not have the chance to perform together yet, this is still a good growing-up period for us. I am looking forward to see what sparks will ignite when all of our individual experiences are pooled together as one when we get back together as 5.

“Me” under beads of perspiration

To commemorate UULA’s original TV series ‘I Love You’ premiere, a celebration party was held on the 18th of July at Tokyo’s Skytree. The main actresses of the TV series were all present. At the same time, main title track artist D-LITE appeared on stage as a special guest with an all black suit. Once he showed up, the venue was filled with screams. Being on Skytree for the first time, D-LITE commented happily, “The Skytree is really tall, the atmosphere is good and it’s really hot (laugh). I don’t think there’s anywhere better than here!” D-LITE then performed the title track ‘I Love You’ passionately in front of all guests with beads of perspiration covering his forehead.

“I am covering Japan’s golden song and also have to ensure that it matches with the drama theme. At the same time, I also have to keep the memories of the original song and showcase my unique traits. Be it my ‘I Love You’ or the series ‘I Love You’, I hope everybody can show us support and love!”
